Illinois may be asking whether your vehicle was insured on an earlier date. A policy you have today may not answer that question.
Find the verification date, reference number and response deadline. Then identify the policy that covered the vehicle when the state checked.
How to read your ILIVS notice ↗1Check the verification date
Was this vehicle insured on that exact date? Start with the responsible insurer or agent.
2Match the vehicle and case
Compare the plate, VIN and reference number so the response reaches the right record.
3Confirm what remains
Reporting, payment and a suspension period can be separate requirements. Check the case result.
What is the Illinois Insurance Verification System?
The Illinois Insurance Verification System, or ILIVS, is the Illinois Secretary of State’s program for checking vehicle liability insurance. The state links to ILIVS.com for official notice access and payments.
ILIVS.insure is an independent insurance agency resource, not a state website. We help you understand the process and can offer auto insurance if you need it. You can keep your current insurer and still ask us for help.

There’s more than one reason for a notice.
Answers before you take the next step.
How do I find my ILIVS reference number?
Look near the top of your notice. If the notice is missing, request assistance using your Illinois plate number or VIN. Our office will follow up and verify registered ownership before discussing the record.

Contact the company or agent that provided that coverage. Give them the ILIVS reference number, ask them to compare the VIN and dates, and have them complete the applicable electronic response. Current insurance may be different from the policy that answers the earlier date.
Read the related guide ↗Can suspended plates be reinstated the same day?
There is no guaranteed same-day result. The case must meet the state’s requirements and show clearance before the vehicle is driven. Reporting, payment and any required suspension period all affect the outcome.
Read the related guide ↗Can I pay to get out of the four-month suspension early?
Payment does not shorten the required period. The time requirement, insurance evidence and $100 reinstatement fee are separate conditions. If you believe the underlying uninsured finding is wrong, have the actual coverage record reviewed.
Read the related guide ↗Is the $100 fee my insurance payment?
No. The state reinstatement fee and the insurance premium are separate payments. Paying the state does not purchase coverage. Paying the insurance company does not pay the registration reinstatement fee.
